Today was a GOOD Day. Today was the kind of good day that makes up for a whole bunch of crappy ones all at once. (This is not to say that I’ve had a bunch of crappy days in a row, quite the contrary, actually. But today made up for several crappy days in the past.) The sun was shining, the temperature was perfect. It was a little windy, but not as bad as it has been the last few days. I met one of my very best friends for lunch at a new Italian place in downtown Fort Worth, Saviano’s. We had a nice, leisurely lunch and got to catch up on all things kiddos, upcoming birthdays, and just life in general. And, we had REALLY good pizza. Continue Reading »
Well, remember how nervous I was two days before the race? It turns out, I was worried for nothing!
No, wait, stop. That’s entirely untrue. I was worried – terrified was the word I believe I used (more than once) – for very valid reasons. I had slacked off in my training: motivation and time just went out the window. I did not respect the distance – 13.1 miles is a LONG way, and one must really build up to that mileage. I had not made it over 9 miles in a training run – 4.1 miles short of the distance. So, yes, I was very nervous, as I should have been. And I was not looking forward to the race; I was upset with myself for being at the point I was because I knew I had no one to blame but myself. It’s not like I was training unsupported – Bryan was always willing to take on kiddo-duty, prep fuel and hydration for my longer runs, etc. So my lack of preparation fell on nobody but me. And I. Hate. Feeling. Unprepared. I may procrastinate, but I end up prepared…no such luck when training for a long-distance race. Continue Reading »
I know, I know. You were hoping for a race report, and I promise, I’m working on it. But a situation came up today that has me thinking about something else. Continue Reading »
Well, it doesn’t have quite the same ring as New Year’s Eve Eve, does it? But that’s what it is. We’re two days out from the Dallas Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon – my first half and Bryan’s fourth. To say I’m nervous would be quite an understatement. My training has been in the toilet lately – time and initiative have definitely been lacking. I’ve not made it over 9 miles on a training run, and when I tried for the all-important 10-miler last Sunday, I failed miserably. I don’t just mean I had to walk some of it or that I couldn’t quite make it to 10 miles. I mean I completely melted down. Had to start walking after 1 mile, never got picked back up to a jog, gave up sometime past mile 2 and walked back to the house. Bryan knew I was struggling, so he had loaded Sam and some struggling-runner aides (cooler bag with cold rags, etc.) and was coming to meet me. He tried to get me to go with him, to go even just around the block. This resulted in me dissolving into tears, and the three of us eventually slogged around the block (so I guess technically I was on my feet for just over 3 miles that day), me in tears the whole way. I’ve made it out to run only once since then, a very slow 3 miles on Wednesday evening. Continue Reading »
My first post as a regular contributor to the Texas Health Moms Blog posted today! It’s not long, and it’s just some thoughts I had coming up on Sam’s first birthday in (gulp) just over a month! I do hope you’ll enjoy it, and leave me a comment, there or here, to let me know what you think! Oh, and be sure to check out the Contributors page on the blog – you might just see a familiar face! 🙂
Now, I know this is a really short post, but  it’s late, so I better get on to bed. Work will be calling early in the morning…
Sam celebrated 10 months of life by cheering Daddy on in the 2011 Cowtown Half Marathon
Sam turned 10 months old on February 27. That happened to also be the day Daddy ran his third half-marathon, the 2011 Cowtown half marathon. Sam was a real trooper, up early with us to go cheer on Daddy for his run. He was quite a hit with the other runners, too. Several folks commented that he was cute, and one person asked how much I wanted for his stroller (hehehe…as if I’d give THAT up. Our BOB is like part of the family!)
Just a few days later, in honor of Aunt Lynne’s birthday and Texas Independence Day, Sam decided it was time to let go of the furniture and do some walking! He took 4 steps to me, and 3 to Bubba. We were so excited, and he was SO proud of himself! Daddy and Bear were at a baseball hitting lesson, so they missed it. Not to worry, just a few more days after that, Sam showed off for Daddy – he stood up (climbed up using Daddy for leverage), turned around to face me without holding onto anything, and took 5 or 6 steps to me, giggling the whole way! Of course, none of it is on video, because it happens so fast that I won’t leave the room to get the camera for fear of missing it!
Sam has also become an expert at maneuvering his walker around the downstairs (something he’s apparently quite good at doing at school, too!), and we’ve dubbed the loop from the living room, around the kitchen island (sometimes even going under the high chair!) and back into the living room as the local Grand Prixe course.
He’s moved pretty fully into 12-month clothes. Some of his 9-month pants still fit okay, but the 6-9 month onesies are rather snug, like cute little baby muscle shirts. 🙂 Sam is waving bye-bye more regularly now, and he’s working really hard on “uh-oh.” (translation, he likes to drop things on purpose to hear us say, “Uh-ooooh!” and tries to repeat it) And several times this weekend I could have sworn he was working on “hi” or “hello” but none of it was clear enough to really count. Here’s a cute video of him waving bye-bye.
Grandma and Grandpa came to visit for four wonderful days this weekend. They got out the camera more often than I did, so I hope to have some pictures from Grandpa soon (hint, hint). Sam just ate up the visit, showing off his new skills and loving on Grandma and Grandpa. It’s hard to tell who had a better time, the kids or the grandparents!
I’m reminded every day (just about every minute) how fast Sam is growing, and that before I know it, he’ll be a whole year old! I’m not ready for that AT ALL. We’re already only a week and half away from 11 months. He’s such a happy baby, and we love him SO much!
Just because it’s Friday and you need something to make you smile. Enjoy – 🙂
Wednesday night was burger night at our house. Bryan was prepping the burgers and fixin’s, I was feeding Sam dinner, Caleb was working on his homework at the kitchen table and Jacob was reveling in his no-homework freedom by playing legos upstairs. The following conversation ensued.
B: Caleb, do you want onion on your burger?
C: Yes!
B: White onion or yellow onion?
C: um…white. Dad? How come your eyes get all watery if you stare at an onion?
Back in September, I got to do a guest blog entry for the Texas Health Moms blog. You’ll no doubt remember how excited I was to get to do this! (Yes, I know that’s a lot of links for the first two sentences. It’s my blog; I’ll link as much as I want to.) Guess what?!?!? I GET TO DO IT AGAIN! And on a regular basis (assuming, of course, they continue to like what I send in) – twice a month, I’ll get to do blog entries for this incredible site. I sure hope I have something fun, interesting, or helpful to say! (Quiet down, you there in the peanut gallery.) I’m working on my first post for them now, so I’ll be sure to link to it here when it goes up. Thanks again, Makala (and Megan and Jennifer, too!), for thinking of me! I’m so excited (and flattered and honored, too) to get to help out on this fantastic site.
Mandatory pre-race photo. As you can tell, I was not amused.
I ran my first ever 10K race today. To say I felt unprepared would be an understatement. I’ve been training for the Dallas Rock-n-Roll half marathon at the end of March, and had been doing pretty well, until . . . remember that ice/snow I posted about from the beginning of the month? Yeah…that, combined with some other stuff (details are for another, more raw post) had me in quite a rough patch, and my training dropped to nearly nil. In fact, before this morning, I had run two times in the last 3 weeks, one 3 miler and one 5 miler. So, I was hoping to just be able to finish today with more jogging/running than walking, and no tossing of cookies. To be honest, really just getting up this morning at 5 and out the door by just after 6 was a victory in and of itself. Continue Reading »
