My boys play baseball (well, not Sam. . . yet). One of the first things you’re taught in baseball – and this is VERY important – is that if you get hit with a ball, you don’t rub it until you get to the dugout. It’s part of the whole tough-guy, never-let-em-see-you-sweat, sports thinking. Today at a scrimmage, J took a baseball to the cup (at least he was wearing one, right?) as he was standing at second base (it was a failed pick-off attempt by the pitcher). He toughed it out and didn’t let anyone see how much it hurt until he was back in the dugout after he scored. Of course, we had to discuss this at dinner tonight. The moment had to be relived for me, since I wasn’t actually at the scrimmage (I was getting some much needed girl time). Here’s how part of that conversation went:
D: I’m impressed, Jacob. You held it together really well when that ball hit you.
J: <<shrugs>>
D: You didn’t rub it out there.
C: <<impishly>> Nobody should rub it in public!
Yeah. . . we all dissolved into giggles. This, of course, was after another double-entendre filled conversation about sticks and poking each other under the table. Life with boys is nothing if not entertaining. 🙂

I know I say it every time, but time is just flying by. People like to remind me lately that Sam’s first birthday is just right around the corner. I’m not ready for that yet, people! I want him to be a baby for as long as possible; don’t rush a toddler on me! Continue Reading »

February is apparently North Texas’s time for snow and ice. Last year, we got over a foot of snow just before Valentine’s Day. This year, we had 4 days off work and school because of snow and ice, February 1 through February 4. We had a fun time in it, but after 4 days being cooped up in the house with 4 boys, Mommy needed a drink! But, since I know you want to see pictures more than read my boring words, here you go! Sam was making the rounds last night, telling everyone good night. Bubba gave him a big hug and said, “night-night, Sam. Sleep good.” Daddy gave him hugs and kisses and said he loved him and to sleep well. Caleb, who was still finishing off his very icing-y cookie sandwich dessert, gave him hugs and said (my new favorite night-night saying), “Sugary Dreams, Sam-o!”
Sam went down like an angel and slept until I was almost ready for work this morning. I guess he did have sugary dreams!

Well, folks – lots has been going on around here. 4 days of ice and snow (and in Texas, that pretty much means you’re confined to home – we’re not equipped for that!), Sam’s 9-month checkup, the Super Bowl in Dallas (with lots of stuff in Fort Worth), a cousin’s impending bar mitzvah to prepare for. Just life in general. And I know there’s bound to be tons of great posts in there somewhere, but I’m feeling kind of uninspired. Maybe I’ve been so busy that I just don’t have the energy, maybe the touch of Sam’s most recent cold has me too fuzzy-headed to put so many coherent thoughts together, maybe being cooped up in the house for 4 days with 4 goofy boys has turned my brain to mush (or possibly some combination thereof)…
I also have several crafty projects in various states of incompletion, and wallets of each of the boys (from November) to send to aunts and uncles, and even cards and envelopes to mail them in. I had a great time today with good friends and family at a fun Stella and Dot party (my friend Cris Waters‘ first party as a stylist – and she did great)!
In short, I have plenty of post-worthy things going on. I don’t know why I feel so uninspired to post lately, but I promise to snap out of it soon and post some adorable snow pictures and a combined 8 and 9-month update on Sammo-dammo. Just bear with me for a bit longer.
(Hey, look at that, I did get a post up…)

Do not adjust your tv sets (or computers). . . you have now entered. . . the TWEEN ZONE (do-do-do-do do-do-do-do). He’s at times moody, pouty, and downright surly. But 5 minutes later, he’s the happy, sweet kid we love to pieces (we love him to pieces even when he’s not happy, but it’s a lot easier when he is! 🙂 ) Example? Last night we had taco salad for dinner. Daddy, Bear and I looooove taco salad. Bubba? Not so much. So he pouted and picked his way through dinner. He was pretty sour about it, especially when he was told “this is what’s for dinner. take it or wait till breakfast.” But after dinner, he played and played and played with Sam while I did the dishes (Daddy and Bear were at baseball practice). Bubba was (and really, always is) the BEST big Bubba to Sam (and most of the time, to Bear ;-)). Continue Reading »

Being a nerdy English-major- and copyeditor-type, I often claim the ability (sometimes the NEED) to create new words. However, I can’t take credit for this one. It goes to Sam’s Daddy.
So, what is Sammunition? Spit-up launched at your clean clothing or hair? Sammunition. Loud, stinky burps or farts? Sammunition. Explosive poopy or leaky diapers? Sammunition. Unexpected tee-tees when the diaper is off for bathtime or changing? Sammunition.
And yes, we’ve taken to aiming Sam, if possible, when those attacks of Sammunition hit. See? There’s (almost) always a funny side to bodily functions, especially when you live in a house full of boys.

We all know her. She’s that woman who fusses at the teenagers from two houses down (who really aren’t doing any harm, or even being loud) to not lay in the street at night in dark clothes. She’s that woman who looks down her nose hautily at the too-short skirts and shorts and low-cut tops of teenage (or, let’s face it, any younger-than-her — or older-than-her, for that matter) girl and clearly thinks, “I’d never let MY daughter leave the house in that” (or, if she’s a boy-mom thinks, “I sure hope MY son never brings THAT home”). Sam is just growing up so fast. He’s started taking after big brother Jacob in the water. He’d play in the tub all day, I think, if I’d let him. Continue Reading »

Today I promise a short post, because believe me I got wordy elsewhere! My friend Laura is going back to work full time this week, so she asked me to do a guest spot on her awesome blog, And Two Became Three. Laura is a friend of mine from college, and the mommy of cutie-patootie Shelby, who is about 6 weeks older than Sam. They got to meet and play together when we were visiting CO in October for Bryan to run the Denver Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon. Laura ran it, too, and they both kicked butt (and inspired me to give a half a try, too!) I hope you enjoy the post!
