Jacob, Duke TIP, and the SATs

It’s no secret that my boys are smart. And handsome. And good-natured. And funny. And loving. And…well, you get the idea. They’re generally dreamy kids. Today, in particular, we’ll talk about Jacob’s intelligence dreaminess.

Back in the fall, we were notified that Jacob’s hard work in his academic classes qualified him to take part in the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). In this program, selected students can take the SAT or ACT. Depending on their scores, they might be invited to other accelerated learning opportunities. It’s a pretty neat thing to be selected to do (and one that I know others in the family, did, too – he comes by those brains honestly!) On January 26, Jacob reported to take the SAT. He was in a room with 11th and 12th graders and the test that was supposed to start at 8 didn’t start until nearly 9 (we don’t know why). 4-ish hours later, Jacob emerged in a pretty good mood, saying the test was “hard, but not THAT hard.”

Yesterday, J’s mom emailed me with his scores, and Bryan sent me the PDF on how to interpret them. I won’t post the scores on here, lest that violate some sort of student privacy something. But I will say that he scored equal to or higher than 58% of the other TIP-ers in Math, at or higher than 44% of other TIP-ers in writing, and at or higher than 35% of TIP-ers in reading.

We’re very proud of Jacob for deciding to participate in the Duke TIP and for studying for the test and doing his best!

Valentine’s Box, The First Year

Remember the Valentine’s Day goodies I posted about last week? I did finish the goodie bags during the week, but that Valentine box? Yeah….it didn’t get started until today. Thankfully, it also got finished today…and then partially destroyed (there is a toddler in the house, and he was helping–you do the math)…and then refinished (sort of–I admit I left it a little rough, still, since it’s supposed to be a toddler’s making).

I really wanted Sam to help with this, or at least to feel like he helped (which is really more the case). So, while I wrapped the box and cut the hole in the top, he made a huge mess with the art supplies and practiced his cutting and gluing. He did put some cute puffy stickers on, and he helped with some of the gluing (have I mentioned he’s really into the gluing?).

Pictures really do show it better, so…enjoy. Continue Reading »

My Lot in Life

Is clearly to be surrounded by devastatingly handsome young men. I got new frames for two of the 8×10 size pictures of Jacob and Caleb that are mainstays on our mantle. I reframed the pictures and as I set them back up, it struck me again of just how incredibly handsome all the boys are. Take a look for yourself. I think you’ll agree. 🙂

All my handsome young men on the mantel.

Valentine’s Day Goodies

Sam’s class is having an actual Valentine’s Day party this year, complete with exchanging valentines and decorated boxes and everything.

Clearly, a 2.5 year old can’t do a TON to help make his valentine box, but I wanted him to feel like he could help. So today, after basketball games, Sam, Granny, and I went to Target. Sam got some blue toddler safety scissors and we picked out a box of Valentine’s Day cards for his classmates (surprisingly, 3-D puppies and kitties won out over Cars, MLB and NBA themes) and we got some stickers and other goodies suitable for decorating a Valentine’s Day box. I also decided to pick up a few things to make an adorable Pinterest project I’d been thinking about. (If you’re not on Pinterest, you should be; it’s highly addictive. Also? Here’s the original link from Polkadots and Puppies–credit where credit is due, folks.)

Supplies: mini bubbles, cellophane bags, “Blowing Kisses” labels (4 labels/page), Packages of Hershey’s Kisses.

Close-up of the adorable labels, courtesy of Polkadots and Puppies.

You know you’ll want to visit her site more often after this; let me make it easier for you!

Because I have anal retentive tendencies multiple children, I’m big into making sure each recipient of gifts like this (gelt at Hanukkah, cake balls at Christmas, etc.) gets EXACTLY the same amount of stuff. I opened up the Hershey’s Kisses and counted them. In case you’re wondering, there were 69 regular kisses and 61 caramel kisses. I did the math and got that each bag could have 5 kisses in it.

I know it’s still 2 weeks away, but I was excited to get started. And hey, I’m a working Momma; if I’m going to do cute, crafty things I have to work when the momentum is going strong. . . and the kids are asleep or otherwise occupied. So, tonight I got started and did the first third.

Aren’t they TOTALLY adorable?

Initially I intended to do this as Sam’s gift to his classmates, but then decided they’d make better teacher gifts. (Plus, I didn’t want to be the Mom everyone got mad at for distributing bubbles and candy to a room full of 2-3 year olds.) And no, Sam doesn’t have 24 teachers, so the extras will be going with me to work. (Sorry if any work folks are reading this and got their surprise ruined.)

8 gifts down, 12 to go, plus one decorated Valentine’s Day card box. I have 2 weeks. I got this. Right?

Sam as a Frog

Sadly, I don’t mean a Horned Frog. Remember the toy shelf we got in January? Sam decided it was really fun to dump all the cars out of the frog bin and play in the bin itself. Caleb used to do this kind of thing, too. 🙂 Personally, I love it. Enjoy.

Frog-head Sam!

So Many Things

Clearly I’m back to my once-a-week-at-best postings. I know my 4 readers are just heartbroken to not be hearing from me more. My excuse this week, at least, was having a sick kid from Monday morning through the wee hours of Wednesday morning. As for the days/weeks prior to that? Yeah…I got nothin’ (that’s my nice way of saying I’ve been lazy about writing.) I do have some great ideas percolating, though. I’ll list them here and you can tell me what you’d like to hear about first!

Work and/or house related posts

  • Mommy’s new desk/office area in the playroom
  • Game room renovation ideas
  • Is it time for something new (re: work-work)? What?

Running related (yes, I’m getting back into it more regularly, finally!) posts

  • To half (again) or not to half?
  • Am I tough enough for a trail run (race) with the hubs?
  • When Do PRs start over (if ever)? Do they really even matter?
  • Running reasons – are there right/wrong ones? Which ones are mine?

My Kids Are So Great posts

  • Report cards
  • SATs
  • Sports
Old stuff I meant to blog about but never got around to it posts
  • Making PJs and breaking sewing machines
  • Christmas recap (oops)
  • Funny things my toddler says

So, what do you think? What would you like to read about first? Now, I need to work like crazy until it’s time to go home, go for a run, and then take Sam to Tot Shabbat. Happy Friday!

Perfect January Day

There are many reasons why I love Texas. Weather like today is one of them. Weather like today–in January–ALMOST makes me forget about our nasty-long streaks of 100+ degree days in the summer. It was upper 60s, sunny, and beautiful.

Sam, Caleb, and I went over to the Duffey’s house so Sam and Lily could play some. They played inside, in the backyard, and they rode bikes in the front for a little while. They even ate lunch together and had a dance party before we had to leave to let Caleb get ready for his baseball practice.

Riding bikes and cheesing for the camera.

After a short stop at home, we headed up to Caleb’s baseball practice. It was at the Y just outside our neighborhood. As we were unloading from the car, I asked Sam to go stand in the grass at the front of the car while I helped Caleb get his baseball bag out of the car and got the diaper bag. When I got up to Sam (less than a minute later) I noticed he was standing in a large fire ant pile and his shoes, socks, and the bottom of his pants were COVERED in ants. Thankfully, they hadn’t started biting – yet. I dropped everything in my hands, sent Caleb on to his team and proceeded to strip Sam to his diaper (thank GOODNESS it was warm today) and started beating ants off pants, socks, and shoes. And those suckers HIDE. I found them well after I thought I had them all out! Thankfully, I only saw one welt coming up on his ankle, and Sam didn’t seem too upset by it.

Once we got the ants taken care of, it was a lovely afternoon for baseball practice.

Sam alternated watching practice and watching the other goings-on by the field.

Today was just a perfect January Texas day, and we fully enjoyed it. 🙂

Toy Overload/Organization

The clutter. The clutter was trying to kill me. I promise, it was.

Now, y’all know I’m no neat freak – far from it. In fact, most of the time my house is in a state much closer to tornado strike than to Better Homes and Gardens. But we were in serious need of toy storage for the munchkin. (We’re in serious need of toy/Lego storage for the big munchkins, too, but that’s all upstairs where I don’t have to see it all the time. And that’s also a topic for another post!)

Behind the dragon-riding cowboy, you see the toys around the fireplace.

In the past, most of Sam’s toys were in our living room, messily piled into bins around our fireplace. It was sort of functional and not at all pretty. Not to mention that half the time, Sam couldn’t get to his own toys without help. With the latest cold snap at Christmas, we wanted to actually use the fireplace, so Bryan and the big boys (with a little help from Sam) schlepped all Sam’s toys into our front room. (If you haven’t followed the saga, it’s technically the dining room, but it’s too small to be functional that way and we never used it. For a long while it was a sort of junk room + piano room, then Bryan’s office + piano room, and now, it’s…well, that’s what this post is about. Oh, and it’s where the Christmas tree was all set up this year.)

Kitchen assembly with Grandpa

I decided I really liked not having all the toys in the living room. And after Grandpa set up Sam’s new play kitchen in the front room and Sam played in there most of the day, I decided that the front room was going to get yet another “makeover.” It was going to become the piano room/play room.

Armed with this new inspiration, I must have gone out on December 26th and hit the after Christmas blow-out sales for organizational wonderousness, right? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! No, I let the idea percolate until I could figure out what I wanted to do (and to make sure other interested parties were really on board with the idea). And, in the meantime, our front room looked like any variation of this:

And, if I’m really honest, these pictures are “neat” compared to what it usually looked like.

I had to make a Target run earlier this week and noticed that all their cube-storage was still on sale. Yesterday evening, Sam and I made another Target run. I decided to start with just a small 6-cube shelf to see how much it helped, and go from there. We also picked out three canvas bins to use in it. Sam was quite excited about the idea of his new “bookshelf.” He talked about it all through dinner and was very adamant that I had to set it up TONIGHT. So, I obliged. (I was itching to get going on it, too.)

Daddy was at basketball practice, so it was just Sam and me working on the new shelf. It went together pretty easily, though I’ll admit the quality is definitely you-get-what-you-pay-for. BUT, it was only $35, so even if it only lasts us 6 months, I’m okay with that. The clutter was trying to kill me, KILL ME, after all. Sam played and cooked while I built. He even tried to help load books onto the not-quite-finished shelf.

Once it was all assembled, it was bedtime. And yes, I timed that strategically because I planned to do another toy-culling once someone was in bed. The clutter was murderous, remember? Now, to make a short story long, here’s the current state of things in the front room.

The brown bin is the music bin, the puppy dog bin is the dress-up bin, and the frog bin is the smaller vehicle bin.

Clearly, there’s still work to do and more toys to pass along to other children, but this is a VAST improvement. Sam can see and get to all his toys on his own, and it will be easier for me to pick them up after he’s in bed for the night (or more accurately, in that 10-minute crazed cleaning sweep that’s done before company arrives). We also have plans for a small desk in that room for the new family computer. So, there’s still work to be done, but I’m happy with how it is for now, and my randomly activated OCD-ness is satisfied.

Family Hanukkah Present 2012

Published by under Daneman Boys,Family Time,Hanukkah

The boys – all 4 of them (yes, even the adult and the 2.5 year old) have been drooling over the new Dell all-in-one touch screen computers. There have been many trips to Best Buy to play with them research them, sigh over them, and dream about having one at home. There were many discussions at home between the adult-type people about whether we really needed another computer at home-no matter how cool it is-and if it was even a good time to buy one like this now, or wait a year to see what the market did with the prices. I finally left the decision about that in Daddy’s very smart and capable hands.

Guess what arrived on our doorstep Monday afternoon? Yep! A new Dell all-in-one, 23″ touch screen machine. It will go downstairs (eventually, when we get the right desk/table for it) as the family computer in a public place. Daddy got it all set up, and even installed a few apps (Fresh Paint is the most popular one right now), so it was all ready to go to surprise the boys when they were with us on Wednesday.

What? We HAD to test out a few features and apps before the boys got to it…quality testing, of course.

It was a HUGE hit. 🙂 I foresee hours of fun on the new machine.

Caleb using Fresh Paint on the new computer.
