First Sam-and-Mommy Trip

From December 15 through the 20th, Sam and I drove to League City to visit Grandma and Grandpa. This was the first time I was brave enough to drive that far with Sam by myself (yes, I know I’m a weenie). Daddy has a big project going on at work, so he couldn’t take time off to join us.

We had so much fun. Sam was wonderful on the drive (both down there and back) and Grandma and Grandpa ATE. UP. the visit. And, of course, Sam had NO problem being doted on by everyone.

He helped Grandma decorate her house:

He colored with Grandpa:

He walked a mile in Grandma’s shoes:

He played with his cousins, especially James:

Sam happily posed for pictures that James took.

He let Grandpa get his belly:

He played in Grandma’s BIG bathtub:

And he read stories with Grandpa:

We also spent time with “Aunt Lynne cookie” making (what else?) Christmas cookies! (Sorry, Aunt Lynne, you’re only partially in these pictures. 🙁 )

We missed Daddy a lot, but we had a wonderful visit with Grandma and Grandpa!

Budding Photographer?

We’ve been pretty busy lately, so I’ve been a little MIA. Look for a flurry of posts to come. We hosted everyone for Thanksgiving, and all had a wonderful, wonderful time. Food abounded, lots of family time. But the best part to come out of Thanksgiving? Some AMAZING pictures that Caleb took with my camera. I’ve collaged them together using Picasa, but I promise I’ve done no other doctoring to them…

Do you see a common subject here? Sam was all-too-willing to be in the spotlight. Can you say H-A-M?

But, more importantly, do you see why a camera of his own is pretty high on Caleb’s wish list? All my photographer friends, be honest…these aren’t so bad for an 8-year-old photographer, are they?

LOVE. MY. BOYS.

Be Careful with Clothes

Published by under Samuel Lewis

And by that, I really mean be careful what clothes you dress your child in for school.

My Mom and I braved a few Black Friday sales. One of our “finds” for Sam has a BlackBerry on it, with a message to Santa (cc-ing Mom and Dad, of course) that says, “too cute to be on the naughty list.” It’s adorable. He’s adorable. PER-FECT!

It was rather chilly pretty dang cold on Tuesday morning, so I picked out that shirt and some pants for Sam to wear to school.

When Daddy got back from dropping Sam off, he mentioned that Sam had a mini-meltdown at drop off because all the kids swarmed him. This happens regularly (the swarming, not the meltdowns) because Sam is one of the last kiddos dropped off in the morning. And, of course, everyone wants to say hi to him! Since Daddy said he calmed down pretty quickly, I didn’t worry too much about it.

That evening, as Sam played in the living room around us:

Daddy: I don’t think Sam should wear that shirt to school anymore

Me: Um…oooooooookay…why? (and yes, I was a tad on edge about it)

Daddy: well…the shirt has buttons on it…

Me: yeeeeeeessss… (still not sure where this was going. Yes, I’m slow on the uptake sometimes)

Daddy: little kids like to push buttons…

Me: (lightbulb, finally) OH! Oh no! Did the kids try to push Sam’s buttons all day? Did the teachers say something?

Daddy: well, it was apparently pretty funny.

We had a pretty good laugh about it. And really, when you’re this cute, can you blame everyone for wanting to “push your buttons?” 🙂

And yes, that's THE shirt

She’s as Bad as the Boys!

Published by under Striking Revelations,The Dog

My phone rings as I’m wasting time slaving away at work this evening…

Me: This is Julie (my standard office answer, even though I know from caller ID that it’s B)

B: hey, oh, wait, putting you on speaker while I let Sadie out (noise, general confusion sounds)

Me: ooooookay…(waits patiently)

B: Seriously, your dog just ripped a BIG one.

Me: (snickering) well, she’s been pretty gassy lately

B: No, really, she was walking into the bedroom ahead of me and “Pthhhhhhhhhhhhhhhbt.” You really would have thought it was me or you or the boys!

Yes, my dog, the only other female in the house, is often as gross (even forgiving the “dog” things like licking parts she shouldn’t be able to lick) as the four boys I live with. *Sigh* And you wonder why I sometimes act a little less than ladylike?

At least she's pretty dang cute and sweet for all her stinkiness!

Googled

I know I’ve been sort of MIA lately on here, and most of that can be attributed to a very busy “busy season” at work. And rest assured, dear reader(s? maybe?) that I’m getting back to it now that I can find my desk. And I’ve started here, with my latest post on the fabulous Texas Health Moms blog.

So, answer me here, or on FB, or on the Texas Health Moms blog, but what things do YOU do to help keep your kids safe when it comes to “the interwebs”? And, did it give you pause when you first found out you’d been “Googled” (by anyone)?

*Sigh* Boys

Published by under Uncategorized

This just happened at my house:

Daddy: Sam, watch out (proceeds to fart – loudly – right near Sam’s head)

Sam: (steps back, looks up) HA HA HA! (monster steps away from Daddy, giggling)

Such is life with boys.

Grandma and Grandpa’s Fall Visit

Since they’re headed up here for Turkey day (two visits in one month! I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! 🙂 ) and I’ve mentioned it in two different posts (here and here), I thought I better do a write up about Mom and Dad’s (Grandma and Grandpa or, less and less frequently, Grandma Ann and Grandpa Reggie) latest visit up here. Mom had planned to come visit the first weekend of November, which also happens to be Caleb’s birthday (double yay!). Dad wasn’t initially going to be able to come, but he hoped business would bring him up our way the following weekend. Well, business didn’t happen that way, and luckily Dad found out in time to join Mom for the visit.

What a weekend we had! Caleb had a baseball game Friday night, so Daddy, Jacob, Sam, and I went to the game to see Caleb tear it up on the diamond (and he did, too!). When it got close to time for Grandma and Grandpa to get in, Sam and I left the game early to meet them at the house. To say that Sam was excited to see them would be an understatement. In minutes, Sam had Grandma and Grandpa dancing around the living room, singing, “wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-yeah!” (thank you, Jack’s Big Music Show, for teaching my son an even greater love of music. Seriously, we keep at least three episodes DVR’ed because it will wipe out any bad mood!) Unfortunately, I didn’t get any of the wiggle dancing on video (and if you’ve ever seen my Dad dance, you know it’s video-worthy). I was too busy holding my sides from laughing so hard.

Saturday we all slept in a little, had totally yummy kolaches and cinnamon rolls from the fabulous Duffey’s Kolache Bakery. The boys played some, and Bryan and Grandpa watched some football. Grandma and I got out to do a little shopping (granted, it was all for boys, not us, but that’s A-OK with us!) and visiting. Grandpa took Jacob and Caleb to Academy and outfitted them with a new tackle box and tackle. . . and Nerf swords. Because you can’t go to Academy and not get Nerf swords. Then we all cleaned up and got in the cars (yes, it took two) and headed to Kobe Steakhouse for Caleb’s birthday dinner.

Sunday, we lounged the morning away.

All three monkeys watching "Space Jam." Hey, at least they know who Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes are......

Then, we took the boys to a neighborhood pond that’s stocked so they could test out their new tackle and tackle box. Sam enjoyed getting to ride around the pond (Grandma and I walked the path around the pond two or three times) and playing at the nearby playground. Below are fun pics of the boys’ catches and some local wildlife at the pond.

Where Does 18 Months Put Us?

Published by under Baby D 2010,Samuel Lewis

Well, now that he’s almost 19 months old (on Sunday, aaaaaaaack!), I thought I’d do an 18-month stats update for Samm-0. At his checkup, he was 26 pounds, 11 ounces (60th percentile) and 32 inches tall (38%…so a little on the short side). He still had some fluid on his ears from an ear infection that wouldn’t go away without a fight, but the ears weren’t infected any longer, so the doc wanted take a wait-and-see approach with it. It does appear that we might be headed for ear tubes, though.

Development-wise, he’s right on track. We answered an initial autism spectrum questionnaire, and the doctor thought it all sounded great; no need to follow up there. Behavior-wise, though, the appointment was pretty miserable. He was so tired and cranky (thank you, time change) and just in general upset about being at the doctor. He got two shots, his Hep A and flu shot. And he cried and screamed the whole time and kept asking to go and to be all done. It was pretty sad. He was even upset enough that he wouldn’t show the Dr. where his eyes and ears and nose (though he did point out Daddy’s nose), etc. were. He did show her his belly, and his toes, though. He did at least tell the Dr. and nurse “bye bye” when we saw them in the hall on the way out.

The day of the appointment was also picture day at school. Because of his appointment, I figured he’d miss his turn, but the director assured me he could have his picture done the next day. So, I didn’t worry too much about what he was wearing. . . Of course, we got there as his class was in the picture room. Sam’s friend, Lily, saw us from waaaaay down the hall and started waving and calling to Sam. So, down to the picture room he went, in his very un-picture-worthy outfit. (He was in khaki shorts and a borderline-too-short white onesie that has TCU embroidered on it.)  We’ve gotten the proofs back and they’re okay, but it looks a little funny that he’s in these winter scenes in summer-type apparel…but it was going up into the mid-80s that day; I just couldn’t put him in long pants and sleeves!

Anyway, as usual, Sam is right on track and learning more and more every day. He’s even starting to put two (sometimes three) word phrases together! Some of the things he’s said lately:

  • Hi Momma (or Dada)
  • bite, please
  • no-no, Say-Say
  • more pasta, please (seriously, the boy has eaten 2-3 Sam-sized servings for dinner the last two nights!)
  • Mornin’ Momma (or Dada)

It’s just amazing to me how much he’s learning every day. His little brain is just on overdrive these days, I think. He makes so many more connections and I know he understands even more than he can say to us. And, I personally love that ever since my parents were here for a visit earlier this month, anytime he thinks someone is at the door, he gets so excited and shouts “Grandma!” (which sounds like Mah-maw; similar to Mama, but definitely different) and “PaPa!” Just melts. my. heart. 🙂

So, Sam, just keep doing what you’re doing. Grow and learn and, best of all, keep teaching me how much bigger my heart can get.

Baby Pushups (or, I wish I was that bendy still)

Y’all remember the post a while back about Sam’s Baby Squashes?

Well, tonight I was videoing Sam dancing to Jack’s Big Music show (I promise, videos to follow soon) and of course my memory card filled up. In looking for things to delete off the card, I came across this video from late August. I don’t recall the specifics of how the pushups started, but the video is just too cute not to share. (And, for the record, even though you don’t really see it in the video, Caleb can crank out some mean pushups!)
