Eagle Mountain Park Hiking
On Labor Day (yes, yes, I know, I’m late posting this – so sue me), we took the boys to Eagle Mountain Park for some hiking. Bryan had been out there trail running in December and had been itching to get the boys out there since then. The trails are well-marked and nice and wide. They’re perfect for family hikes–easy enough for little ones (probably not for strollers, though) but with enough challenges to keep bigger kids interested.
Jacob did most of the leading for us as we walked, with Caleb close behind. Bryan and I alternated bringing up the rear, though usually I was last.
Sam enjoyed the ride in the Moby wrap. He loved being outside and seeing all the new sights!
We hiked about 3 miles in about 2 hours. Clearly we were enjoying the walk, not gunning for record time. While we were on the trail, we saw an old-tyme plane (single propellor, single wing) do a loop-de-loop in the sky above us. It was very cool to see – “awesome”-inspiring, if you will.
We also had what every hike with children needs, a potty stop (sorry, no pictures of this one). And, of course, one of the benefits of having a family of boys is that the world, really, is your toilet. You just check that the trail is clear, step a bit off the trail (nobody wants to step in it, right?) and tinkle away to your heart’s (or bladder’s) content.
We also came upon an armadillo, foraging for his meal. He paid us no mind as we snapped a couple pictures of him, and then went on our way.
We also came upon a snake. And by we, I mean I startled it right near the edge of the path. It shot off very quickly in the opposite direction, far away from the trail. Experts would tell you that this movement was proof that the snake really was more frightened of me than I was of it. My very snake-phobic self would say “NU-UH!” The only reason I didn’t scream like the girl I am is because Sam was sleeping in the moby and I didn’t want to startle him. The big boys were quite disappointed that they didn’t see the snake. It moved so fast I couldn’t even tell what color it was, but I could tell it was big and did NOT have a rattle (thankfully!). I blame Bryan for this part of the adventure, because it hadn’t even been 5 minutes since he’d quipped, “Well, we’ve seen an armadillo, but no snakes, yet.” He just HAD to mention snakes…thanks, babe. 🙂
All in all, snake scare included, it was a fun day. I’m sure we’ll be back again since all the boys enjoyed it so. And yes, I had a good time, too.
